Manchester United have confirmed the arrival of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred on a five-year deal running until 2023.
Fred was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City at the start of the year before Pep Guardiola pulled the plug on talks and switched his attention to Napoli ace Jorginho.
United reached a deal in principle with their Ukrainian counterparts prior to the start of the 2018 World Cup but have finally completed a deal in the region of £50m.
“This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be part of this amazing team,” Fred told the club’s official website. “To work with Jose Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed.
“I cannot wait to get started and to meet my new team-mates. I would like to thank everyone at Shakhtar Donetsk for everything they have done for me over the past five years.
“This is a very exciting time for me with my focus now fully on the World Cup with Brazil.”
Fred missed Brazil’s opening game at the 2018 World Cup with an ankle injury but is not expected to feature heavily, if at all, for Tite’s side.
United have made signing at least one central midfielder a priority this summer following Michael Carrick’s retirement and will be forced into the market again if Maraoune Fellaini leaves.
Of the 34 players that attempted at least 25 dribbles in the Champions League last season, Fred had the best success rate (88.5%).
