Manchester United midfielder to sign new deal before 2018

Ander Herrera will put questions about his long-term future to bed and sign a new Manchester United deal before December, reports Manchester Evening News.

Renewing Herrera’s deal was expected to be a formality for United after the Spain international established himself as a key player for Jose Mourinho last season, but he has dropped down the pecking order this time around leading to questions about his future.

Reports emerged over the weekend suggesting Herrera, who was linked with a summer move to Barcelona, is no longer one of Mourinho’s trusted lieutenants and the arrival of Nemanja Matic has come at the expense of his playing time.

However, the 28-year-old is expected to sign a new long-term deal with United and the club expect that to happen before he is free to discuss a Bosman transfer with foreign clubs in January.

Herrera has only racked up 90 minutes of football this season and was left out of the squad for their opening Champions League group game altogether. With Paul Pogba sidelined for at least a month, the Spaniard should get more game time in the coming weeks.

Despite barely featuring this season, Herrera has made more tackles (83) and interceptions (84) than any other United player in the Premier League.
