Tottenham and Southampton discuss swap deal involving Hojbjerg

Tottenham are in talks with Southampton about signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in exchange for Kyle Walker-Peters, claims The Guardian.

Jose Mourinho is keen to sign wantaway midfielder Hojbjerg from Southampton this summer and is willing to sacrifice Walker-Peters' Tottenham future to get a deal done.

Walker-Peters is currently on a season-long loan deal with Southampton and has impressed for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side since the restart.

Despite wanting to sign a new right-back this summer, Mourinho is prepared to offload Walker-Peters permanently to land his top midfield target.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has already warned Mourinho there is limited money to spend this summer and he will have to utilise the loan market and free transfers.

Despite entering the final 12 months of his existing contract, Southampton still want a sizeable fee in return for his signature.

Southampton have reduced their asking price from £35m to £25m as a result of COVID-19, which will prove out of reach for Mourinho's side.

The biggest hurdle to overcome will be how much Tottenham and Southampton each value Walker-Peters in reducing Hojbjerg's asking price.

Tottenham would ideally want a straight swap deal and will argue it is fair given the length of Hojbjerg's remaining contract.

The fact Hojbjerg reportedly wants to join Tottenham over Ajax and Manchester City also works in Mourinho's favour.

Hojbjerg has taken his time to realise the early potential showed at Bayern but has enjoyed a thoroughly impressive campaign for Southampton.

In fact, Hojbjerg has won possession in the middle third more times than any other player in the Premier League this season (175).
