Chelsea enter market for Arsenal striker Aubameyang

Chelsea have earmarked Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as an alternative to RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, claims ESPN.

Frank Lampard is desperate to sign a new striker for next season to ease the burden on current first-choice Tammy Abraham.

Chelsea failed in attempts to sign Werner and Napoli striker Dries Mertens in January and Lampard remains interested in the former.

However, Stamford Bridge is not Werner's first-choice destination this summer, with Liverpool and Bayern Munich in a better position to land the Germany international.

Chelsea are now weighing up alternatives and have been alerted the the availability of Arsenal captain Aubameyang.

The 30-year-old will only have 12 months left to run on his current Arsenal deal this summer and the Gunners accept he will not pen fresh terms.

Aubameyang wants a huge increase on his current £200,000-a-week deal and Champions League football and Mikel Arteta's side have decided to cash in this summer.

Refusing to sell Aubameyang this summer will leave them open to the prospect of a free transfer away at the end of next season.

With Arsenal open to offers, Chelsea are now interested in making a move to prise Aubameyang from their London rivals.

Since making his Arsenal debut at the start of 2018, only Mohamed Salah (51) has scored more goals than Aubameyang (49) in the Premier League.
