Southampton sign former Juventus defender

Southampton have announced they have completed a deal to sign free agent Martin Caceres on a deal that runs until the end of the season.

Caceres, 29, has been a free transfer since his deal with Juventus expired at the end of last season and hasn’t featured since February 2016 after suffering a serious injury.

The Uruguay international arrives at a time where Claude Puel is short of options at the back following Jose Fonte’s departure last month and Virgil Van Dijk’s long-term ankle injury.

Southampton have been forced to field Maya Yoshida and youngster Jack Stephens at the heart of their defence and Caceres will provide an experienced option and could even feature against Manchester United in next weekend’s EFL Cup final.

“I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football,” Caceres told Southampton’s official website. “I am looking forward to getting started with my new teammates.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.”

Caceres hasn’t played in more than 12 months after suffering an Achilles injury in Juventus’ 1-0 win over Genoa in February last year.
