Tottenham identify £3m Alderweireld replacement

Tottenham are interested in signing West Brom defender Jonny Evans this summer, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are expected to sell Toby Alderweireld at the end of the season after contract talks broke down earlier this year.

Tottenham want to sign an experienced defender to replace the Belgium international and have earmarked Evans as a top transfer target.

The former Manchester United defender was heavily linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester City in January but neither were prepared to match West Brom’s asking price.

Alan Pardew’s side were holding out for more than £20m for the 30-year-old so City opted instead to sign Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Club for £57m.

However, Tottenham have now expressed an interest in signing the Northern Ireland international, who has a £3m release clause in his contract if West Brom are relegated.

West Brom are currently bottom of the Premier League and 10 points adrift of safety with seven games remaining.

Tottenham will not be the only side interested in signing Evans if West Brom are relegated, however.

Since August 2015, only three Premier League players have won possession in the defensive third more times than Evans (361).
