Arsenal to look to Spain to bolster backline

Arsenal have identified Athletic Club centre-back Unai Nunez as a summer target as head coach Mikel Arteta seeks to add another defender to his squad, reports Spanish publication La Razon.

The Gunners have struggled defensively this season with Arteta looking to improve the defence ahead of his first full campaign at the Emirates Stadium helm.

Shkodran Mustafi is tipped to depart in the summer and while Pablo Mari has joined on loan from Flamengo, Arteta is eyeing up the chance to freshen up his defence.

And the Spaniard believes compatriot Nunez would be the ideal addition for the north London side.

The 23-year-old has made just 10 league starts for Athletic Club this season, with Nunez on the winning side in just one of the 10 LaLiga matches he has featured in from the off.

He supposedly has a £26m release clause in his contract and with Arteta needing to tighten the purse strings in order to strengthen is squad, every penny counts this summer.

Nunez is behind Inigo Martinez and Yeray Alvarez in the pecking order for the LaLiga side and had returned a WhoScored rating of 6.63 this season.
