Liverpool and Manchester City have emerged as shock suitors for Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Townsend, 24, impressed for Newcastle after joining from Tottenham at the start of the year but his performances weren’t enough to stop the Magpies from being relegated.
Nevertheless, the England international has still been linked with a move to a raft of Premier League clubs this summer and Liverpool and City have emerged as surprise admirers of the winger.
Townsend’s reported £10.5m release clause has peaked the interests of both Premier League giants, who could swoop for the wideman if they fail to land their number one targets.
No Newcastle player finished last season with a higher WhoScored rating than Townsend (7.35).
