United eye second Benfica defender

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to follow up the signing of Victor Lindelof from Benfica with the arrival of Nelson Semedo, reports The Daily Mirror.

Mourinho’s side are already in talks with Benfica to complete a deal to sign Lindelof when the January transfer window opens and the United boss also has his eye on their right back in a bid to strengthen his defence for the second half of the season.

However, United may be forced to wait until the summer to sign Semedo with Benfica unwilling to lose two of their best defenders in January with the club still in the Champions League and also battling for the league title.

The United manager has no plans to replace Antonio Valencia, who has excelled at right-back this season and is poised to sign a new deal, but Mourinho is keen to bring in competition and has earmarked Semedo as Valencia’s long-term replacement.

No defender has completed more dribbles in the Portuguese Liga Nos this season than Semedo (29).
