McCarthy pens new Everton deal

Everton midfielder James McCarthy has snubbed reported interest from Spurs and signed a new five-year deal at Goodison Park, the club has announced.

McCarthy, 24, has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane this summer, but Everton have been served good news after the Irishman agreed to commit his future until the summer of 2020.

“I’m buzzing and delighted to be committing my future long-term to Everton,” McCarthy told the club’s official website. “I’ve loved every minute I’ve been here, with the fans having made me feel so welcome from day one, as well as the players and staff.

“This is a brilliant club with a brilliant fan base and what we want to try and do is bring some success here and push forward.

“The gaffer is trying to build a team and a squad for the long-term and I’m excited to be part of that and to be part of this team.”

The Ireland international enjoyed another fantastic season in Everton colours last season and it must have come as no surprise to manager Roberto Martinez that there was interest in his midfielder.

In fact, no Everton player blocked more shots, passes or crosses than McCarthy last season in the Premier League (64).
