Roma complete deal for Sassuolo striker

Roma have announced they have completed a deal to sign Sassuolo striker Gregoire Defrel on an initial one-year loan deal worth €5m (£4.5m) with an obligation to make the move permanent for a further €15m (£13.4m).

Defrel has put pen to paper on a five-year deal that will run until June 2022 as Roma structure the deal to spread the finances involved across several years.

The 26-year-old, who has spent the last two years with Sassuolo, will now fly out to America to join up with his new Roma team-mates on their pre-season tour.

“I’m really happy to finally have Gregoire in our squad,” Roma’s sporting director Monchi told the club’s official website. “He was a priority for us because he is exactly the type of striker we were looking for.

“He can play in three different positions, he’s quick, he plays for the team, he gives us depth and he has a great nose for goal.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has previously scouted the French striker, but Roma have won the race for the versatile forward as they look to bolster their offensive options in the wake of Francesco Totti and Mohamed Salah’s departures.

Of players that scored more than 10 Serie A goals last season, Defrel had the best conversion rate (27.9%).
