Barkley has been a revelation for the Hatters this season following his free arrival last year and his performances under Rob Edwards haven't gone unnoticed.
United are expected to revamp their midfield at the end of the season, with Joao Neves and Frenkie de Jong linked with a move to Old Trafford.
However, 30-year-old Barkley has since emerged as a shock target for United as the prepare for the potential departures of Sofyan Amrabat, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.
United are unlikely to make Amrabat's move permanent in the summer, while Casemiro and Eriksen have both been linked with moves away.
Barkley has returned a WhoScored rating of 7.25 this season, that better than any other Luton player in their debut Premier League campaign.
United are expected to be active in the summer market as they look into a squad refresh after their 2-1 loss to Fulham on Saturday.
