Payet prolongs West Ham stay

Dimitri Payet has penned a new contract at West Ham until 2021, the club has confirmed.

The Frenchman was rumoured to have been approached by an unnamed Chinese Super League team in midweek, who were prepared to spend big to take him to China.

However, Payet brushed aside suggestions he could leave Upton Park and has since signed a fresh five-and-a-half year deal with the east London side.

"For me it's a big step, an enormous show of faith, particularly from the Chairman [David] Sullivan and from the manager," Payet told the club’s official website.

"I've said it several times, I feel good here, everyone's done all that they can to make me feel good. I want to help West Ham grow and, once again, this new contract shows my desire and motivation to fulfil those objectives.”

Payet, 28, has been a revelation for the Hammers following his summer switch from Marseille.

Six goals and four assists in the Premier League has contributed to a WhoScored rating of 7.63, the fourth best in England’s top tier, while his average of 3.7 key passes per game is second only to Mesut Ozil (4.3) this season.
