Manchester United to battle Manchester City for Benfica wonderkid

Manchester United are to compete with rivals Manchester City for the signing of Benfica’s 20-year-old midfielder Florentino Luis, according to Record via the Daily Star.

The youngster has been linked with a move to Manchester City in the past and the defending Premier League champions are ready to reignite their interest in the tough tackling Portuguese midfielder next summer.

However, United are prepared to battle with City for his services as they seek midfield reinforcements.

Luis has started all four league matches for Benfica this season as they came into the international break second in Liga NOS.

And Luis has impressed having gained a WhoScored rating of 7.53 from his four top-flight outings with his stock continuing to soar.

Indeed, PSG were recently knocked back in their efforts to sign Luis, who has a £91m release clause in his contract. That would surely rise if he is rewarded with a new deal, however.

It would be deserved too with Luis making more tackles and interceptions combined (31) than any other player in Liga NOS this season, reinforcing statistically calculated WhoScored strengths of ‘tackling’ and ‘ball interception’.
