Contract talks with Paris Saint-Germain getting nowhere, says Marquinhos’ agent
The agent of Marquinhos has revealed there has been no progress in contract talks with Paris Saint-Germain in five months putting suitors on red alert.
Marquinhos’ existing deal is due to expire in the summer of 2019 and his time at PSG has not come without problems.
The Brazil international had grown frustrated by a lack of first team opportunities prior to this season but David Luiz’s departure in the summer has allowed the versatile defender to establish himself as first choice under Unai Emery.
However, PSG would be well advised to wrap up his long-term future before the end of the season to avoid encouraging rival clubs to up their interest and test the waters with a summer bid.
“Marquinhos has still not renewed,” his agent, Giuliano Bertolucci, told Barcelona-based Mundo Deportivo. “There have not been any talks with PSG for five months. The renewal is at a standstill."
Barcelona have previously been heavily linked with a move for Marquinhos before eventually securing the services of Samuel Umtiti from Lyon last summer and Bertolucci insists Luis Enrique’s side have not rekindled their interest.
“For now I have not had any [new] contract with Barca,” he continued. “PSG’s president [Nasser Al-Khelaifi] never wanted to negotiate the player’s exit and the clubs didn’t mange to reach an agreement. He didn’t want to negotiate with Barca – nor with any club.”
Marquinhos is currently on course to enjoy his most involved campaign since joining PSG from Roma in 2012, needing just one more start to equal his best campaign at the club. Only teammate Presnel Kimpembe (93.8%) has a better pass success rate at the club in Ligue 1 this season than Marquinhos (93.3%).
