John Terry suffers serious foot injury

Aston Villa defender John Terry faces a long spell on the sidelines after confirming he suffered a broken metatarsal in his right foot against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Terry was forced off after 20 minutes against their Championship rivals before scan results revealed the club’s worst fears.

The 36-year-old had played every minutes of Villa’s 16 league matches this season prior to Saturday’s 2-1 defeat and his absence will provide Steve Bruce a major issue going into the hectic festive period.

“I have just had news that I have broken my fifth metatarsal,” Terry revealed on Instagram. “Devoted is an understatement to how I’m feeling tonight. I will be doing everything I can to get back fit as soon as possible.”

Terry has performed beyond expectations since arriving from Chelsea on a free transfer over the summer and now Bruce will be tasked with replacing his captain in defence to maintain Villa’s promotion push.

Despite defeat to Wednesday, Villa are still in the play-off places but now they are only three points above 11th. Only three defenders have made more clearances than Terry (123) in the Championship this season.
