Van Bommel relieved of duties by PSV

PSV on Monday morning announced the departure of Mark van Bommel as head coach.

A 3-1 defeat to rivals Feyenoord proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back, with the loss leaving PSV 10 points off top spot.

Ajax's 1-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar means the gap wasn't extended, but a run of two wins in their last eight league matches saw Van Bommel relieved of his duties after 18 months in charge.

"PSV have parted company with head coach Mark van Bommel following recent disappointing results," a statement read on the club's official website.

"Our most sincere thanks go to Mark van Bommel for his efforts the past eighteen months."

General manager Toon Gerbrands said of Van Bommel's exit: “Performances and results have been far below what is expected at PSV.

“Matches are measuring moments but we also keep a close eye on the progress down the road. We always try to help and support each other at PSV and that’s what we have done the past few months.

"The club’s interest will always be of prime importance. Following a review of the current status in and around the first team, we have come to this painful decision. We have all tried hard to turn things around but unfortunately failed to do so.”
