Southgate calls up Townsend

Gareth Southgate has called up Crystal Palace midfielder Andros Townsend after Raheem Sterling withdrew through injury, the Football Association has announced.

It marks the first time Townsend has featured in an England squad since pre-Euro 2016 friendlies against Turkey and Australia.

Sterling has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season and his absence will come as a blow for interim boss Gareth Southgate, who is gearing up for his first matches as England manager against Malta and Slovenia over the next two weeks.

Of forward players in the Premier League only Crystal Palace teammate Wilfried Zaha (18) has completed more tackles than Townsend this season (17).
