Tottenham quoted £35m for midfield target

Southampton are prepared to cash in on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer but want £35m for the Tottenham target, claims the London Evening Standard.

Hojbjerg has emerged as a top transfer target for Jose Mourinho this summer, as the Tottenham manager looks to add greater quality to his midfield for next season.

The Denmark international has entered the final 12 months of his current Southampton deal and is stalling on new terms amid Tottenham's interest.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has already warned Hojbjerg he will lose the captain's armband for next season if he fails to agree terms on a new deal.

However, it has now emered Southampton will sell the former Bayern Munich midfielder if he refuses to extend his stay at St. Mary's.

While that news will please Tottenham, the downside is Southampton have slapped a £35m-asking price on his head.

Mourinho has reportedly been told there is no money to spend this summer and he must instead work on loan signings and free transfers this summer.

The Coronavirus pandemic has been tipped to financially cripple clubs round the world, with Tottenham among the worst affected clubs in the top half of the Premier League.

However, if Southampton have made it clear Hojbjerg must leave this summer rather than leave on a free in 2021, Tottenham will hope to drive down their valuation.

Hojbjerg has impressed since taking on the captaincy at Southampton and has won possession in the midfield third more times than any other player in the Premier League this season (157).
