Real Madrid snap up Lyon defender in €48m deal

Real Madrid have made their fourth signing of the summer after announcing a deal for Lyon left-back Ferland Mendy.

Mendy has put pen to paper on a six-year deal running until 2025 after Madrid agreed an initial €48m (£42.7m) deal with Lyon.

The France international is the fourth player Madrid have signed this summer and the fifth new arrival after Rodrygo's year-long loan deal with Santos concluded.

Madrid have now spent in the region of £250m on Eder Militao, Luka Jovic, Eden Hazard and Mendy and are not expected to stop their spending spree.

Premier League duo Paul Pogba and Christian Eriksen are also transfer targets for Madrid, though there is no swift deal in sight for either player.

Mendy has been signed to provide competition for places for iconic Madrid defender Marcelo, who is determined to fight for his place at the club next season.

The 31-year-old endured one of his worst ever campaigns for Madrid last season and even lost his place in the team to Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon did well in his 14 league appearances but will almost certainly have to leave Madrid for regular playing time following Mendy’s arrival.

Mendy made 30 league appearances for Lyon last season and played a direct hand in three goals in that time (two goals, one assist).

The 23-year-old finished 2018/19 as Lyon’s fifth highest WhoScored rated player (7.09) in Ligue 1.
