Italy head coach extends contract

Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio has confirmed they have extended the contract of national team head coach Gian piero Ventura to 2020.

Ventura was made Antonio Conte’s successor as Italy head coach after Euro 2016 and the Azzurri are on course to qualify for the 2018 World Cup under his watch.

Italy are currently level with Spain at the top of Group H on 16 points and seven points clear of third place Albania, while Tavecchio insists the country has full confidence in their new man.

“We’re here to announce the extension of Azzurri CT Giampiero Ventura’s contract until 2020,” Football Italia quote Tavecchio as telling the media. We have full confidence in him.”

The extension now means that Italy have put their faith in the 69-year-old for the next two major tournaments over the next three years.

Ventura has overseen 10 matches as Italy head coach and hasn’t lost since his first match in charge back in September 2016 (vs France).
