West Ham’s chances of signing Celta Vigo striker Gomez are over
West Ham have missed out on top transfer target Maxi Gomez after failing to agree terms with Spanish side Celta Vigo, claims Sky Sports.
The Hammers have been heavily linked with a move for Gomez for the past six months and had hoped to land the Uruguay international this summer.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side were willing to use the money raised from Marko Arnautovic’s sale to China to match Gomez’s £45m release clause.
West Ham have been locked in talks with Celta for a number of weeks but have failed to agree a payment structure with their Spanish counterparts.
Gomez is now expected to stay in LaLiga and join Valencia, who are able to offer the 22-year-old Champions League football next season.
Valencia are expected to finalise a player-plus-cash deal with Celta in the next 24 hours involving Santi Mina heading in the opposite direction.
Gomez is one of only six players to have scored 30 goals over the past two seasons in LaLiga and the youngest by 1973 days.
