Tottenham gazump Man Utd for new defender

Tottenham have agreed a €30m (£27.6m) deal in principle to sign Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon, claims The Guardian.

Manchester United had been locked in talks to sign Reguilon for a number of weeks but Tottenham have managed to hi-jack the deal.

Jose Mourinho's side have agreed to both a buy-back clause and given Madrid first right of refusal in Reguilon, which United refused to entertain.

While United hoped to make a breakthrough on both sticking points, Tottenham have swooped in and agreed to Madrid's demands.

Reguilon had reached personal terms with United but has now given the greenlight to joining Tottenham and a deal is immiment.

The Spain international is not wanted by Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane despite a thoroughly impressive loan stint at Sevilla last season.

With Marcelo and Ferland Mendy above in the pecking order, Madrid have sanctioned Reguilon's departure but realise he has massive potential and could return in the future.

Reguilon finished the 2019/20 campaign as the highest WhoScored rated left-back in LaLiga, claiming a spot in our Team of the Season.
