Underfire Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed he hopes to bring Arsenal forward Theo Walcott back to the club this month.
Walcott is widely expected to leave Arsenal this month in order to salvage his hope of making the 2018 World Cup after dropping down the pecking order at the Emirates.
Southampton will back Pellegrino in the transfer market this month after the club’s stuttering start to the season and the 46-year-old has confirmed an interest in Walcott, 12 years after he left St Mary's.
“He is a good player, but I don’t know with the negotiations, with the market, I imagine that this type of player would have a lot of possibility. For us it’s not easy,” teamtalk quote Pellegrino as saying.
“Hopefully we can bring somebody that can help us be stronger. This is our target now. We know the market is difficult, but we are working on that.”
Walcott has only managed 50 minutes of Premier League action spread across five substitute appearances this season.
The 28-year-old hasn’t featured for England since November 2016 and would require a superb end to the season to have any chance of forcing his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for 2018 World Cup.
