Leicester attempt to hi-jack Everton’s move for Sigurdsson with bigger wages
Leicester have not given up in their pursuit of Gylfi Sigurdsson and are ready to offer to the Swansea midfielder £125,000-a-week wages to snub Everton this summer, reports The Daily Mail.
Sigurdsson has been heavily linked with a move away from Swansea this summer and was even omitted from the squad that left for their pre-season tour of America last week in order to sort his future.
While Swansea are resigned to the fact that Sigurdsson has outgrown the club for the second time in his career, they are not interested in being bullied in the transfer market and have slapped an enormous £50m valuation on his head.
Leicester had a £40m bid rejected for the 27-year-old earlier this month and are now ready to make Sigurdsson the highest paid player in the club’s history in order to beat Everton, who have also had a £40m bid turned down.
Craig Shakespeare’s proposed £125,000-a-week offer is reportedly bigger than Everton’s, although it remains to be seen whether the Toffees would be willing to match their rivals.
There is also no guarentee that a greater financial package will convince Sigurdsson to turn down an Everton side that has already been hugely ambitious in the transfer market this summer.
Sigurdsson played a direct hand in 22 goals in 38 appearances for Swansea in the Premier League last season, which is all the more impressive when you factor in the club where battling relegation for the whole campaign.
Not only that, but only Kevin de Bruyne (24) created more clear-cut opportunities in the 2016/17 Premier League campaign than the Swansea ace (16).
