Sam Allardyce has decided Wayne Rooney will continue as England captain, the Football Association has confirmed.
Rooney has been England captain since taking on the armband after the 2014 World Cup but his place in the team has repeatedly been called into question over the last 12 months.
However, the 31-year-old, who has made a decent start to the season with Manchester United, has retained the armband in Allardyce’s first big decision of his tenure as England manager.
“Wayne has been an excellent captain for England and the manner in which he has fulfilled the role made it an easy decision for me to ask him to continue,” Allardyce told the FA’s official website.
“Wayne’s record speaks for itself. He is the most senior member of the squad and he is hugely respected by his peers.
“All of these factors point towards him being the right choice to lead the team.”
Rooney only needs one appearance to become the most capped outfielder in England’s history (currently 115 caps, level with David Beckham).
