Rooney to remain as England captain, confirms Southgate

England manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed Wayne Rooney will stay on as captain despite his recent controversy.

Rooney, 31, came in for widespread criticism after appearing in the front pages of the national newspapers following a heavy night of drinking that ended with the Manchester United skipper engaging with wedding guests at the team’s hotel.

England’s all-time record goalscorer has since labelled the media treatment as ‘disgraceful’ and rubbished claims he even went into the wedding, but there had been some suggestions Rooney could lose the captain’s armband as a result.

However, Southgate, who was confirmed as England manager on a permanent basis on Wednesday, says Rooney will remain on as captain.

“Wayne Rooney is the England captain,” Southgate said as his official unveiling as England manager, via The Daily Mirror. “I have said that at the beginning of my interim period.

“I have only selected him to start two out of the four matches we have had. It is not a case that Wayne expects to play every game. It is important we develop more leaders in the group, give other opportunities to lead.”

Since being dropped by club and country earlier this season, Rooney has actually rediscovered some form in recent weeks.

The veteran striker is only two goals short of becoming United’s all-time record goalscorer, but has played a direct hand in six goals in his last eight appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side (two goals, four assists).
