Newcastle turn to relegation rivals for new striker

Newcastle are in advanced negotiations to sign Swansea City striker Bafetimbi Gomis, according to L’Equipe.

Steve McClaren’s side have already signed Jonjo Shelvey from their relegation rivals this month and are now hopeful of taking Gomis off their hands in order to beef up their offensive options.

Newcastle’s strikers have struggled for goals this season and have been linked with an array of strikers this month, including former Magpie Loic Remy.

The Magpies have reportedly already offered Gomis terms on a two-and-a-half year deal, but the former France international is reportedly looking to a longer contract.

Gomis started the season in sensational form in front of goal, netting four goals in each of his first four league games at the start of the campaign. He has, however, only scored twice in his last 19 competitive matches since then and is believed to have become surplus to requirements since Francesco Guidolin took charge at Swansea earlier this month.

Furthermore, Gomis has been caught offside at least 11 more times than any other player in the Premier League this season (33).
