Jose Mourinho has confirmed David De Gea has played his final game for Manchester United this season but expects the goalkeeper to report for pre-season amid interest from Real Madrid.
United only have two games of the season remaining and Mourinho has already confirmed Joel Pereira will be handed his first ever start for the club in their final league game before Sergio Romero will take over between the sticks for next week’s Europa League final.
De Gea has re-emerged as Madrid’s No.1 transfer target this summer two years after his failed move to the reigning European giants and it’s now conceivable that United’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham last weekend will go down as De Gea’s final ever game for the club.
However, Mourinho insists United have no interest in losing one of the world’s best players and is hopeful De Gea will report back for pre-season and remain at the club for next season.
“David? I think the first match against LA Galaxy in pre-season in Los Angeles,” Mourinho told Sky Sports when quizzed about De Gea’s future.
“I hope to play Joel Pereira against Crystal Palace. I hope to play Sergio in the final and hopefully we don’t have problems with these two keepers. And David is top of the world and we want to keep top of the world.”
De Gea, who has been voted the club’s player of the season in each of the last two campaigns, is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world but it is difficult to see United fending off interest in Madrid particularly if they receive a record bid for a goalkeeper this summer.
In the last three Premier League campaigns De Gea has kept at least three more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper (39).
