Chelsea midfielder set for new long-term deal

Chelsea are set to hand Brazilian midfielder Ramires a new four-year deal worth in excess of £70,000-a-week, according to the London Evening Standard.

Ramires, 28, still has two years to run on his current deal at Stamford Bridge that he signed in 2012 and has previously been linked with a move away from the Premier League champions having failed to nail down a regular starting berth since joining from Benfica in 2010.

The reigning Premier League champions have endured a troublesome start to the defence of their title having only taken eight points from their opening eight league games and there have been calls for Chelsea to strengthen their central midfield to ease the burden on Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic.

The Brazil international has only started in two matches thus far in the league, having made a further two appearances from the substitutes’ bench.

The introduction of Ramires against Newcastle with Chelsea 2-0 down proved the catalyst to their comeback at St. James’ Park at the start of September, as he halved the deficit with a rasping long-range effort during just a brief 17-minute cameo.
