Barcelona target signs new deal with Manchester United

Manchester United have announced Victor Lindelof has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal running until the summer of 2024, with an option to a further 12 months.

Lindelof’s previous deal was not due to expire until 2022 but United have moved to secure his long-term future following speculation linking the Sweden international with a move away in the summer.

The 25-year-old’s agent suggested Barcelona were interested in signing the United centre-back during the summer but now his client has pledged his future to the Red Devils.

“Since the day I arrived at United it has felt like home,” he told the club’s official website. “I have grown significantly both as a player and as a person in the last two years and for that I am grateful to everyone at the club for their help and support.

“I love playing football and my aim now is to help the team to win trophies and repay the fans for their unrivalled support. I know that everyone at the club shares this vision and will give everything to get Manchester United to where it belongs.

“I’m still young and know I can improve further but with the help of the boss and his coaching staff, I believe that only good things are ahead for this great club.”

Lindelof endured a testing first year at United following his £31m move from Benfica in the summer of 2017 and was limited to just 13 league starts under Jose Mourinho.

The Swede grew in confidence in his second campaign and started 29 times in the Premier League and is now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred partner with summer signing Harry Maguire.

In securing Lindelof’s long-term future, United have now got their entire first-choice back five on long deals after David de Gea also ended uncertainty about his plans earlier this week.

Only Paul Pogba (3369) has featured in more minutes than Lindelof (3052) of all United outfielders in the Premier League since the beginning of last season.
