Everton target move for Atletico Madrid striker

Everton will step up their interest in Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro in January in a bid to sign a goalscoring striker, reports The Daily Mirror.

Ronald Koeman’s side have only scored four goals in their opening six league matches and the Everton manager has already lamented the club’s failure to sign a replacement for Romelu Lukaku.

Everton failed in their attempts to prise Olivier Giroud away from Arsenal in the summer, while they were reportedly also willing to pay Chelsea €75m (£65.8m) to sign Diego Costa in August.

Costa only wanted to re-sign for Atletico and his return means Everton will now target a January move for his new team-mate Gameiro.

The 30-year-old has only managed 27 minutes of playing time in the league spread over two substitute appearances this season having failed to make the impact hoped when he signed from Sevilla for £28m over 12 months ago.

Koeman’s side may prefer a loan deal until the summer where they can further assess their options rather than spend big on a striker that will be the wrong side of 30 by the end of the current campaign.

The former Paris Saint-Germain striker scored 12 goals and provided five assists during his maiden league campaign for Atletico, but his first team chances will be further limited when Costa is free to play at the start of new year.
