United blow in pursuit of Benfica defender

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Nelson Semedo after the right-back committed his future to Benfica.

Jose Mourinho has already ended his pursuit of Benfica teammate Victor Lindelof after the impressive performances of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo in recent weeks but there was still an interested in strengthening the right side of his back four with the signing of Semedo.

The £35m-rated right-back has been earmarked as Antonio Valencia’s long-term replacement but any bid will have to come at the end of the season at the earliest after Semedo declared his intentions to stay with the Portuguese giants through the January transfer window.

“You can rest easy,” The Daily Mail quote Semedo as saying. “I’m completely focused on Benfica and I’m hoping to continue here for may years to come.”
