Simeone close to agreeing new Atletico Madrid deal

Atletico Madrid are close to renewing Diego Simeone’s contract, claims MARCA.

Simeone’s current deal is due to expire in June 2020 but Atletico are keen to secure his long-term future.

The 48-year-old is the longest-serving current manager in La Liga, having spent the last seven years at Atletico.

Simeone has been a revelation for Atletico, transforming the club he played for into genuine contenders in Spain and Europe.

Atletico made Antoine Griezmann the best-paid player at the club over the summer and the terms proposed to Simeone would even eclipse that deal.

Atletico spent well in excess of £100m in the summer in a bid to close the gap on last season’s champions Barcelona but have made an underwhelming start to the season.

Simeone was even dealt his heaviest defeat as Atletico manager by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, losing 4-0 at home.

Atletico have drawn five of their first 12 league games but only languish one point off Barcelona despite their middling performances.

Since becoming Atletico boss in December 2011, Simeone has won 61.9% of his matches in charge.
