SERIE A PREVIEW: Inter, Roma and Fiorentina fight for the Champions League

Even though the gap at the top of Serie A is only three points, the most exciting battle is arguably that for the final Champions League spot in the table. Fiorentina, Roma and Inter are only separated by five points and with the latter two set to face off this weekend, the drama is set to continue.

Luciano Spalletti return the club has coincided with a remarkable up-turn in form for Roma in the league. Had they been more ruthless in attack, they could also have knocked Real Madrid out of the Champions League as well. In fact, only Barcelona (12) are on a current longer winning streak across Europe’s top five leagues than Roma (8), who had stretched their hold on third to five points ahead of their weekend’s opponents and Fiorentina.

As for Inter, they have been one of the more frustrating sides in Italy this season. The depth of their squad and suggests they should have collected much more points than they currently have but Roberto Mancini has struggled to find the right system to accommodate his best players.

Having said that, consecutive wins over Bologna and Palermo has pulled them back into the fight for third and recording their first win at Roma since 2011 would certainly give them a huge chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season. With Fiorentina set to face off against strugglers Frosinone, there could potentially only be two points separating these three teams with eight games to go.

Juventus, meanwhile, will make the six-mile trip to face city rivals Torino in the Turin derby. Juventus will have the chance to extend their lead at the top to six points before Napoli host Genoa in Sunday’s evening kick-off and will be confident of doing so against opponents they’ve beaten in five of their last six encounters.

Added to the fact Max Allegri’s men are on the longest unbeaten run in Serie A this season (19 matches), and Torino have only two wins from their last 15 league matches, this could prove the perfect, emotionally-charged fixture for Juve to overcome Champions League heartbreak from midweek. It is worth mentioning that the away side will be without Paulo Dybala, Claudio Marchisio and Giorgio Chiellini this weekend, but if Alvaro Morata can repeat his display from midweek, then they should have not problem in strengthening their grip on first place.
