Mourinho blow as Xhaka poised to sign new Arsenal deal

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Granit Xhaka will stay at Arsenal amid interest from Jose Mourinho's Roma.

Xhaka was keen to leave Arsenal at the start of the summer but Roma fell short with a €15m offer for the Switzerland international.

The 28-year-old has entered the final two years of his current Arsenal contract but the Gunners will now offer him improved terms to end Roma's interest once and for all.

"Granit is going to stay with us," The Daily Telegraph quote Arteta as saying. "He is a player that we rate and value so much.

"He is a key member of our squad. He has trained two days and he wanted to play today, and I think it is a very clear commitment from his side that he wants to be here."

Mourinho will now certainly have to look elsewhere for a new central midfielder and Roma have already been linked with Borussia Dortmund's Thomas Delaney.

Xhaka has spent the last five years at Arsenal but his time in England has not been smooth sailing by any means.

In fact, Xhaka has collected more red cards and committed the most errors leading to goal combined (11) than any other outfielder in the Premier League since August 2016.
