Manchester United to hand new deal to Spaniard

Manchester United will trigger an option in Ander Herrera’s existing deal to extend his stay by a further 12 months if current contract talks drag on, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Herrera’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season but he has established himself as an important squad member under Jose Mourinho and United are confident of securing his long-term future.

The Spain international, who was linked with a move to Barcelona over the summer, has dropped down the pecking order this season following the arrival of Nemanja Matic but United still want him to sign a new contract.

However, Mourinho’s side do not want a situation where his future is unresolved at the start of next year and will trigger a clause to extend his deal to the end of next season if they fail to make a breakthrough in negotiations.

Since the start of last season, Herrera has completed more tackles (100) and interceptions (88) than any other United player in the Premier League, despite only starting two matches this term.
