RB Leipzig extend lead at the top of the Bundesliga

RB Leipzig has pulled six points clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga following their 4-1 win away to Freiburg on Friday evening.

Bayern’s 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund last weekend allowed the newly promoted German side to leapfrog the Hollywood club into first place and the new found pressure of leading the division has not effected Leipzig’s performances.

A trip to Freiburg, who had taken 12 points from a possible 15 at home prior to Friday’s match, presented a potentially awkward fixture for the Bundesliga leaders, but they made it look simple, scoring four goals in a league match for just the second time this season.

Two more goals for Timo Werner, who has now scored more league goals than any other player aged 21 or under in Europe’s big five leagues this season (7), helped Ralph Hassenhuttl increase the pressure on Bayern ahead of their difficult match against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men come into Saturday’s fixture off the back of two straight defeats for the first time since May 2015, having followed up defeat to Dortmund with a shock 3-2 loss against Russian champions FC Rostov in the Champions League in midweek.

As for Leipzig, however, they are now on the longest winning streak of any team in Europe’s top five leagues this season, after recording their seventh win in a row.
