Arsenal failed in a last-gasped effort to sign Juventus striker Simone Zaza, according to reports in Italy.
Arsene Wenger’s side had been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain duo Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the final hours of the transfer window on Tuesday, but it has now emerged the Arsenal boss actually made contact with Juventus for Italian striker Zaza.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio’s website, the north London outfit approached the player’s agent, before making an official enquiry to Juventus.
However, the Serie A champions had no intentions of parting ways with the 24-year-old without being able to bring in any replacement and stuck a €30m (£22m) price tag on the strikers head knowing Arsenal would not meet it.
Instead, Arsenal finished the transfer window having failed to sign any outfield players to their squad; something that has left fans disgruntled.
Zaza, who was strongly linked with a move to West Ham earlier this summer, has spent the last two seasons at Serie A rivals Sassuolo. In that time, only Domencio Berardi (31) has scored more goals than Zaza (20) for Sassuolo in the league.
