Atletico announce new deal for in-form midfielder

Atletico Madrid have announced Yannick Carrasco has put pen to paper on new terms keeping him at the club until 2020.

Carrasco, 23, was only 12 months in to the original deal he signed when he arrived from Monaco but his impressive recent form has seen Diego Simeone’s side move to secure his long-term services.

The Belgium international had been linked with a move to Chelsea but news of his new contract would seemingly put an end to their interest in the Atletico midfielder.

“This is a very young player but with a huge personality, capable of pulling the team when it needs it,” Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Caminero told their official website.

“His speed and dribble gives us many alternatives in attack. He also has a great shot, as we have seen in some of his goals, which makes him a very dangerous player.”

Carrasco was eased in to life at Atletico during his debut campaign last season where he was limited to just 16 starts in the league with a further 13 appearances coming from the bench. In fact, Simeone subbed only Angel Correa on more times in the league last season (18).

In just 11 appearances in league and European competition this season Carrasco has already scored as many goals than he managed in 38 appearances last season (5).
