West Ham and Southampton will trigger Andros Townsend’s £8m release clause if Newcastle are relegated, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Townsend only joined Newcastle from Tottenham in January in a £12m deal but the former England international has impressed since moving to the North East and his performances have caught the eye of some of the teams at the top half of the table.
Newcastle are one point above the drop zone with two games remaining having gone three games unbeaten but they will face the prospect of losing Townsend for just £8m if they fail to beat the drop.
Townsend is Newcastle’s highest rated player in the Premier League this season having played a direct hand in six goals from his 11 appearances (four goals, two assists).
