Juan Mata has held talks with Jose Mourinho about a contract extension at Manchester United but remains in the dark about his future at Old Trafford.
The Spain international was expected to leave in the summer following Mourinho’s arrival following their turbulent relationship at Chelsea that led to Mata’s switch to United in 2014.
Mata, 28, still has two years remaining on his existing deal but is allegedly ‘desperate’ to extend his stay at United.
“There have been talks, but Juan is still in the dark over his future at the club,” a source told The Sun.
“He is desperate to stay and likes his life in the Manchester area. It is all down to Jose ‘s decision now.
“United don’t want to leave this one rumbling though and are keen to sort it before the New Year.”
Mata was subbed on and then brought off in the Community Shield, which fuelled suggestions the creative midfielder was heading for the exit but the Spaniard impressed in their 4-1 win over Leicester at the weekend to offer hope towards a role at the club going forward.
Since joining, only Wayne Rooney (43) has scored or assisted more goals for United in the Premier League than Mata (37).
