Bundesliga outfit Schalke have confirmed their interest in Inter star Xherdan Shaqiri.
The 23-year-old has been subject to fierce speculation linking him with a move away from the San Siro and Inter manager Roberto Mancini said at the weekend that the Swiss star had already rejected three offers, including one from Stoke City.
However, a return to the German top-flight would appear in the offing after Schalke’s sporting director Horst Heldt confirmed the club’s interest.
"This player is on the market," Heldt told Bild. "He is exceptional quality. A club like Schalke 04 has to then look into such a player and to explore whether this transfer can be realised.
"Xherdan could help us so we’re obliged to check out the details."
Having come off the back of a successful World Cup, which saw no player average more key passes per game than the Switzerland international (4.3), the last six months have gone down as a disappointment.
Shaqiri only managed eight starts in Serie A after completing his switch from Bayern Munich to Inter in January and already looks to be on his way out.
