Dortmund midfielder pens new deal

Borussia Dortmund have announced Sven Bender has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal keeping him at the club until June 2021.

Bender, 26, has just over a year remaining on his current deal and had previously been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool and Arsenal among those often linked with the versatile defensive midfielder.

However, both will now have to look at alternative options, with Bender now contracted to Dortmund for the next five years.

“I want to thank Hans-Joachim Watzke, Michael Zorc and Thomas Tuchel for the trust placed in me,” Bender told Dortmund’s official website.

“We have brought some very good discussions to a conclusion. I am extremely happy to be wearing the black yellow jersey in the future. It would be glad if in the next few weeks of one or other of my teammates would follow suit.”

Bender’s season has been disrupted by injury forcing him to make just six starts in the league, with most of those appearances coming at the heart of Dortmund’s defence. Tuchel's side are yet to taste defeat in the league with Bender in the starting XI (6 matches).
