West Ham interested in Manchester United outcast

West Ham are the latest Premier League side to express an interest in signing Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney at the end of the season, reports Sky Sports.

Rooney was heavily linked with a big money move to China earlier this year after dropping down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho this season and his long-term future beyond the end of the current campaign is still unclear.

The 31-year-old was also omitted from Gareth Southgate’s current England squad due to a knee injury and has been given no assurances that he has a place in the international set-up in the long-term despite his current status as captain.

It seems obvious that if Rooney wants to represent England at the World Cup in Russia next summer then he needs to leave United this summer and now West Ham are thought to have joined Everton in the race to land the United captain if he becomes available at the end of the season.

Rooney became United’s all-time leading goalscorer in all competitions when he netted a stunning stoppage time equaliser against Stoke in January but he has only featured four times since then and was an unused substitute in United’s EFL Cup win over Southampton last month.
