Manchester United transfer news: Sanchez signs and Mourinho commits future

As far weeks go, it’s been nothing but positivity for Manchester United supporters. Jose Mourinho may have ruled out any more signings during this transfer window, but it’s already been a month to remember at Old Trafford.

We round up the biggest stories associated with the Red Devils over the past week.

‘Manchester United have a new No.7’

Manchester United transfer news: Sanchez signs and Mourinho commits future

Monday evening saw Manchester United complete one of, if not the biggest, January signing of all time as Jose Mourinho’s announced the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Sanchez was widely expected to join Manchester City but ended up joining their city rivals in a straight swap deal with Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The 29-year-old has been presented the No.7 shirt at Old Trafford and is the first incumbent of the fabled shirt since Memphis Depay’s failed stint at the club.

Sanchez has travelled with the rest of the United squad for Friday’s FA Cup fourth round match against Yeovil and is expected to make his debut for Jose Mourinho’s side against the League Two outfit.

The Chile international has lifted the FA Cup twice since moving to England in 2014, scoring eight goals in 14 appearances in the competition during that period.

‘Mourinho signs contract extension’

After signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, Manchester United followed up with an announcement that Jose Mourinho had put pen to paper on a 12-month contract extension running until June 2020.

Mourinho’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of next season but the Red Devils have rewarded the 55-year-old with a bumper new deal as a reward for his success at the club so far.

The former Chelsea manager picked up the League Cup and Europa League trophy, as well as the Community Shield, during his first season in charge and his side are currently Manchester City’s closest rivals in the Premier League.

Despite being 12 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side, United have more points, have scored more goals and conceded fewer times this time around in the Premier League compared to the same stage last season.
