United offer contract to Bayern star

Manchester United have offered Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger a lucrative two-year deal, according to German newspaper Bild.

The news could scupper any plans Bayern might have of extending the 30-year-old’s stay, with United reportedly offering the Germany captain €5m-a-year.

Bayern’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted earlier this week that Schweinsteiger was flattered by United’s interest and that the club were going to sit down with the midfielder this weekend.

Louis van Gaal is supposedly keen to reunite with Schweinsteiger at Old Trafford this summer, as he looks to add experience ahead of United’s return to the Champions League.

The 30-year-old would certainly bring style and composure to United’s midfield. Only Philip Lahm has played more accurate passes in the last six Bundesliga seasons that Schweinsteiger (9,954).
