Manchester United boss confirms huge injury boost

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Romelu Lukaku has overcome recent ankle problems and is fit to start against Liverpool on Saturday.

Lukaku required pain killing injections to feature in United’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace before the international break and was limited to just 24 minutes of playing time over Belgium’s two matches during the international break.

However, Mourinho has confirmed that the 24-year-old is fit to feature against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday to hand his side a huge boost ahead of their first big match of the season.

“Michael Carrick? I know he cannot play. I know that,” Mourinho told the club’s official website. “Lukaku looks fine and that’s it.”

Lukaku has made a stunning start to life at United since making a £75m switch from Everton over the summer, scoring 10 goals in his first nine competitive matches for United.

However, the Belgium international will only be judged on his performances in the big games for United and a trip to Anfield represents his first opportunity to silence any lingering critics.

Lukaku has scored five goals in 11 Premier League appearances against Liverpool in his career, but only one in his last seven attempts.
