United launch surprise bid for Mane

Manchester United have aligned their attentions on Southampton’s Saido Mane after missing out on Barcelona winger Pedro, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Louis van Gaal’s side had been expected to sign Pedro this summer but have lost out after Chelsea re-entered the race for the 28-year-old.

The Spain international is expected in London on Wednesday for his Chelsea medical and United have surprisingly turned to Mane in order to add pace to their front line.

Mane, 23, enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League with Southampton last season after joining from Red Bull Salzburg for £10m.

The Senegalese international scored 10 goals, including the Premier League’s fastest hat-trick (2mins 56 seconds) against Aston Villa.

Additionally, no player to have made more than 10 league appearances needed fewer minutes per successful dribble than Mane (36.2mins) for Southampton last season.

Ronald Koeman’s side are expected to fight to keep the player having already lost Morgan Schneiderlin to United this summer.
