Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini expects captain Vincent Kompany to return to first-team action in the next fortnight.
There had been suggestions Kompany, who has been sidelined with a calf injury since Boxing Day, had suffered another injury setback that had pushed back his return by a further six weeks.
However, despite previously stating Kompany may not be available until the last part of the season, the City boss has rubbished those reports and insists the Belgium international should return in the next two weeks.
“I don’t think Vincent will be out for six weeks - he will return in a couple of weeks. It’s very important how he improves in the next weeks,” Pellegrini is quoted as saying by The Guardian.
“Be sure we are doing all we can to review Vincent in different places with different doctors. For him also, he’s very sad not to play, I hope that now when he comes back he will be fit until the end of the season."
Reoccurring calf problems have limited the 29-year-old to just nine league appearances this season and City have felt the full force of his absence at the back this season. City are unbeaten when Kompany has started for them this season, but their win percentage drops to just below half (46.7%) without him in the team.
